Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Melbourne
Gi and No-Gi · ages 16+ · beginners welcome

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling system that teaches you to control and submit an opponent using leverage rather than strength. We run beginner-friendly Gi and No-Gi classes for ages 16 and over at 272 Dundas St, Thornbury.
We're a small, friendly group that suits absolute beginners really well, with a very healthy number of women training. Our focus is on skills transfer with pressure testing, and when your instructor feels you're ready, we'll encourage you to enter competitions.
What you'll learn
- Positions and control: guard, mount, side control and back control.
- Escapes: how to get out from underneath a bigger, stronger person.
- Sweeps: how to turn a bad position into a good one.
- Submissions: chokes and joint locks, taught step by step with safety first.
- Takedowns: how to take the fight to the ground on your terms.
- Drilling and rolling: repetition with a partner, then controlled sparring once you're ready.
Gi and No-Gi BJJ
Gi BJJ is trained in the traditional uniform. Grips on the jacket and collar make it slower and more technical, which is great for learning the fundamentals. No-Gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts, and it's faster and more dynamic. Our Monday and Saturday classes are Gi, and Wednesday is No-Gi. If you're a beginner, we recommend learning both.

Your instructor: Daniel Bacon
Daniel has trained in Japanese Jiu Jitsu since 2005 and holds a 5th Dan black belt. He began BJJ in Melbourne in 2010 and is now a brown belt, training under Ninos Dammo, head instructor of Australian Elite Team. He has won medals at Grappling Industries, the Pan Pacific Championships and the Victorian State Championships.
Add Japanese Jiu Jitsu if you want the full picture
BJJ is a fantastic ground game, but it doesn't set out to cover everything. If you'd also like striking, weapons and knife defence, multiple memberships let you add Japanese Jiu Jitsu and train in both.
