Takagi Yoshin Ryu is a traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu school known for close-in fighting. It traces its origins to a mountain priest called Unryu in the 16th century, and takes its name from Takagi Oriuemon Shigenobu.
Origins
Around 1569, Unryu, an expert in shuriken, bojutsu, spear, naginata and taijutsu, passed his system to a Samurai named Ito Sukesada, who added hanbo, sword and short sword. Ito's techniques were then taught to the young Samurai Takagi Oriuemon Shigenobu (1625 to 1711), who received his full licence at 20 and later revised and expanded the teachings under his own name.
His father is said to have given him the teaching: "A willow is flexible, but a high tree is breakable."
Connection with Kukishin Ryu
Takagi Yoshin Ryu has been called Jutaijutsu, Jujutsu and Dakentaijutsu at different times. In the 17th century, the heads of Takagi Yoshin Ryu and Kukishin Ryu fought a friendly match, became close friends and exchanged information, and the two schools have been close ever since.
