Weapons training is incredibly interesting, it teaches you a lot about working with different distances and greatly improves your body control and timing. It also makes it easier to see the strategies being used. A lot of martial arts don't study weapons training at all which is a real shame because not only do you learn about controlling the distance and refining your timing much faster but it's also a lot of fun.

Many new students are really surprised at how much they enjoy the weapons section of the class even if initially they didn't see any point at all in training with a Sword or a Bo.

Bo Staff Training

Bo, Jo and Hanbo are our three wooden staff weapons, Bo is 6 foot long , Jo is 4 foot and Hanbo is 3 foot. All are really interesting and have a wide variety of skills and techniques to learn from striking, locking, throwing against all sorts of grabs, kicks and strikes.  With a combined total of over 80 Kata there is always something new to learn.

Sharp Weapons Training

Sword or Katana training is done with wooden sword called Bokken, we practice basics intermediate and more advanced techniques with both the long sword (Katana) and the short sword (Shoto), we also train knife (Tanto) defence as a regular part of our training routine. We use wooden training weapons for this practice and the emphasis is on safe training along with good body control.

Sword is one of our most popular weapons and a lot of fun to learn.

Flexible Weapons Training

Hojo justsu (tying cord) training includes how to make handcuffs, rope linking and trying an opponent up after arresting them with jujitsu techniques.  Kasarifundo is meant to be a 1m length of chain with a steel weight attached to each end, in class we practice these techniques with a 1m length of rope for safety purposes.

A t-shirt, belt or really anything flexible that is about 80 cm long can be used to apply most of these techniques
